It is a tough position to be in.  As Abraham Lincoln said after his defeat by Steven Douglas, "I am too big to cry about it, but it hurts to awful bad to laugh!"  He was runing against the incumbent for a seat in the US Senate against the incumbent.  Lincoln had served only one term in the US house of Representatives.  He was ahead in the popular vote but still lost.
